Joel released this song in 1973 based on his life experience as a lounge musician. He decided to do the song to escape his record company due to the poor performance of his album. This was his first major hit and now his signature song. The song peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified 5X Platinum. It was in the 2004 Rolling Stone list of top 500 Greatest Songs of all time and it ranked #63 in Ultimate Classic Rock's list of the Top 100 Classic Rock songs. In 2015 it was preserved by the Library of Congress National Recording Registry for being of "cultural, historical or artistic significant".
