This was a request I got from Sonny Walkman. Not sure if he was trying to give me a hard song but little did he know that this might have been the first 45 rpm record I ever bought. Devo, a New Wave, Synth Pop band released this song in 1980. Warner Bros. did not expect this song to be a success but it became an international hit, charted in several countries & peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. The video was also a hit on MTV. It was like writing a short story, and it was basically on these old ladies that I had known as a kid.

This song was recorded in 1976 by the Moments as WE DON"T CRY OUT LOUD under the stewardship of the great Sylvia Robinson. Melissa Manchester imagined doing this song in a similarly sleepy style and was "surprised by the bombastic arrangement " awaiting her in the studio.

I'm sure like a few people, I had to recreate my avatars. I was satisfied with the performace and the coordinating of the dance, camera work and my singing. After all that, there was no recording of my vocals! I find such difficulty in finding the time to produce these that I decided to release the video despite the obvious lack of vocals! "Ships" was sung by Barry Manilow & written by Ian Hunter.
Hunter & his father often butted heads while he was growing up & it wasn't until he was older that he started to see things from his dad's perspective. So "Ships" was a coming to terms with, & an appreciation of Ian's dad, Walter Patterson. Ian's father died 18 months after the song was released & he said goodbye on Blackpool beach where they had watched "the dogs play around on the sand" (in earlier years).
